What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
The Medicare-funded Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program that provides up to $1,013 of dental treatment for eligible children aged 2 – 17 over two calendar years, covering most basic general dental services. You do not need to register your child for the
CDBS. Further information can be found at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/oralhealth/Pages/childdental-benefits-schedule.aspx.
What is the eligibility criteria for the CDBS?
To be eligible, you or the child must be claiming one of the following benefits: Family Tax Benefits Part A, Parenting Payment, Abstudy, Youth Allowance, Carer’s Payment, Disability Support Pension, Special Benefits or Double Orphan Pension, or relevant Australian Government payment listed through the Department of Human Services. Your child must also be aged 2 to 17 years for any one day of the calendar year, and is eligible for Medicare. If you are unsure, it is quick and easy to check your eligibility. Simply ask us or alternatively you can call Medicare on 132 011 (7 days a week, 24 hours a day) or visit www.humanservices.gov.au
How does the $1,013 cap work?
Eligible children may have up to $1,013 of dental treatment over a two-year period. It begins at the start of the calendar year and any money not spent in the first year is carried over to the second year. You cannot claim benefits from both private health insurance and the CDBS for the same services.
What dental services are covered?
A range of services are provided by the CDBS. These include:
- Dental examinations
- Fissure sealing
What is not covered?
- Orthodontics (braces)
- Treatment under general anaesthetic
- Cosmetic dental treatment (such as teeth whitening)
What happens if my child is eligible?
Once you have completed the consent form, Totally Smiles will check your child’s eligibility. Your child will receive the following dental services:
- A comprehensive examination
- A scale and clean
- Remineralising agent application
If my child is not eligible for the CDBS, how much does it cost?
If your child is not eligible for the CDBS funding, Totally Smiles Mobile can offer a check-up, clean and remineralising agent treatment at a discounted fixed fee of $99 for schools, and $79 for childcare centres. If you have private health insurance, Totally Smiles will provide you with an invoice after your payment to claim your refund.
