Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?

The CDBS is a Medicare-funded program providing dental care for eligible children, providing access to basic dental services for children aged 2 to 17 years old. The entitlement is capped at $1,026 per child for every two calendar years.

What is the eligibility criteria for the CDBS?

To be eligible, you or the child must be claiming one of the following benefits:

  • Family Tax Benefits Part A
  • Parenting Payment
  • Abstudy
  • Youth Allowance
  • Carer’s Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Special Benefits or Double Orphan Pension, or relevant Australian Government payment listed through the Department of Human Services.

Your child must also be aged 2 to 17 years for any one day of the calendar year, and is eligible for Medicare. If you are unsure, it is quick and easy to check your eligibility.

Simply ask us or alternatively you can call Medicare on 132 011 (7 days a week, 24 hours a day)

What happens if my child is eligible?

Once you have completed the consent form, Totally Smiles will check your child’s eligibility. Your child will receive the following dental services:

  •  Comprehensive Examination
  • Scale and Clean
  • Remineralising agent application

If your child requires further treatment, dental x-rays or fissure sealants may be carried out. If your child is ineligible for the CDBS, our clinician can provide the same quality services, at a discounted fixed fee of $99 (or $79 for childcare centres).

What if my child is scared or anxious about dental treatment?

Your child’s dental care is top priority, and will be provided by highly trained, registered dental clinicians who are highly trained in working with children. Every effort will be made to ensure that children participating feel safe and confident about their dental care. If your child becomes upset or is otherwise unable to complete their treatment, they will be able to return to class and our clinician will contact your school to reschedule the appointment.

How will I know what happened at my child’s dental appointment?

A report outlining what was done at your child’s appointment will be provided via SMS / email. If your child needs further dental care, our clinicians will be in contact with you.
